How Vanilla 26.x Light Engine Works
Minecraft tracks two distinct lighting layers: Sky Light (0-15) and Block Light (0-15). When a block changes or a chunk loads, light propagates outwards in a BFS (Breadth-First Search) queue across all adjacent blocks.

Starlight Engine vs. Vanilla 26.x Rewrites
In 26.x, Mojang integrated many asynchronous lighting optimizations inspired by Starlight. However, for massive servers with high TNT activity, using dedicated lighting mods like Phosphor or Starlight can still reduce light lag by up to 80%.
