Minecraft Nether Portal Calculator

Convert Overworld and Nether coordinates with the 8:1 portal ratio. Enter either side and the matching destination updates instantly.

Java & Bedrock

Overworld

Divide X and Z by 8

8:1

Nether

Multiply X and Z by 8

Only X and Z use the 8:1 ratio. Y stays unchanged. Overworld-to-Nether conversion uses floor rounding, including for negative coordinates.

How Nether portal coordinates work

One block traveled horizontally in the Nether equals eight blocks in the Overworld. Divide Overworld X and Z by 8 to find a Nether target; multiply Nether X and Z by 8 for the return destination.

Minecraft may connect to an existing nearby portal instead of creating one at the exact target. Building both portals near the calculated coordinates reduces incorrect links.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Overworld to Nether ratio?

The horizontal coordinate ratio is 8:1. X and Z scale, while Y does not.

Why can a portal link to the wrong place?

Minecraft searches for nearby existing portals around the converted target. Another portal or a different Y level can become the closest valid link.

Does this calculator work for Bedrock Edition?

Yes. Java and Bedrock both use the same 8:1 horizontal coordinate ratio.

How are negative coordinates rounded?

Overworld-to-Nether targets are rounded down with floor behavior, so -1 divided by 8 becomes -1 rather than 0.
