The Art of First Impressions: Professional Server MOTD Design
Stop using generic welcome messages and make your server pop with MiniMessage and my custom MOTD tool.
While I was browsing a server owner community on Facebook (yeah, some people still use that!), I saw a post from a guy who was extremely frustrated that his server's welcome message looked generic compared to the big networks like Hypixel or Mineplex. He wanted those beautiful gradients, the centered text, and the sparkling effects, but he was stuck using those old school ampersand codes like &a and &l. I reached out to him and explained that the secret is a format called MiniMessage, but I realized that explaining the syntax wasn't enough. People need a visual way to design their "front door". That is why I built the MOTD Generator. It is a tool designed to help you create a first impression that actually recruits players.
MiniMessage: The New Standard for Server Formatting
If you are still using ampersand codes for your server, you are living in the past. Modern server software like Paper and Velocity now support MiniMessage, which allows for much more flexible and readable formatting. Instead of a mess of symbols, you use tags like <rainbow> or <gradient:red:blue>. It is much more intuitive, but it can still be a bit tricky to get the alignment exactly right. My tool provides a live preview that mimics the Minecraft server list, so you can see exactly how it will look to a potential player. I even added support for those "hover and click" events if you are using the message in-game. Branding is everything in the competitive world of Minecraft servers, and if your MOTD looks like it took five seconds to write, people will assume your game modes are just as low effort. Spend a few minutes on the facade of your server and show them you mean business.
Centering and Visual Balance
One of the hardest things to do in an MOTD is centering your text. Because Minecraft uses a proportional font (an 'i' is thinner than a 'W'), counting spaces isn't accurate. I built a "Center Text" feature into the MOTD Tool that automatically calculates the correct padding for you. It takes into account the different widths of every character to make sure your branding is perfectly balanced. I also included a library of "System Icons", those little characters that big servers use to make their messages stand out. Whether you want a custom star, a lightning bolt, or a unique arrow, you can just drag them into your design. I have tested the output across multiple client versions to make sure the colors stayed vibrant and the formatting didn't break for players on older versions. Don't be the generic server in the list. Be the one that people stop to look at!
